Dr. Xunming Deng, President , CEO and Co-Founder

Dr. Deng is a recognized authority in thin film silicon photovoltaic technology and has a strong track record in the development of high-efficiency solar cells and in the design, construction and optimization of high-throughput photovoltaic manufacturing equipment. Dr. Deng received his PhD in physics in 1990 from the University of Chicago with a dissertation focused on amorphous silicon materials and solar cells. He then worked as Senior Scientist and Project Manager for Photovoltaic Development at Energy Conversion Devices, Inc.’s Machine Division, building roll-to-roll PV production lines. Dr. Deng joined the UT faculty in 1996 and founded UT’s amorphous silicon PV program.

Liwei Xu, Ph.D., Co-Founder and Vice President of Administration and Government Grants

Dr. Xu and Dr. Deng co-founded Midwest Optoelectronics, LLC in 2002, which was re-organized into Xunlight Corporation in 2006/2007. During the seven years from 2002 to 2009, she established and had been in charge of the Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, and Administration Departments at Xunlight. Currently, she is in charge of Human Resources and Administration Departments, and oversees all the Government Grant projects at Xunlight.

Dr. Xu played a key role in the rapid growth of the Company, from 2 employees to over 80, and in the Company’s receiving over $60 million funding of venture capital and private equity investments and government grants and loans. She also served as the principal investigator for three U.S. Department of Energy grants, totaling $3.4 million. Dr. Xu received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1991. Her experience also includes 2 years at the University of Michigan as a postdoctoral research associate, 3 years at Energy Conversion Devices, Inc as a senior research scientist, and several years at the University of Toledo as a visiting assistant professor.

Mr. Joe Garton, Vice President of Manufacturing

Mr. Garton joined the company in January 2009 as Director of Supply Chain. Mr. Garton’s prior experience includes 22 years with Pilkington, a member of the NSG Group. Pilkington is one of the largest flat glass companies in the world. As Director of Procurement, Mr. Garton was responsible for $750 million in annual purchasing spending for 10 manufacturing plants in the US, Canada, and Mexico. His other manufacturing experience includes 8 years as Plant Manager at three different manufacturing plants in Canada and the US, and 9 years as a Production Manager. Mr. Garton experience in manufacturing includes: new plant start‐ups, large capital projects, Black Belt certification and lean manufacturing implementation in a team based organization structure. Mr. Garton received his MBA from the University of Toronto.

Dr. Masat Izu, Senior Vice President of Engineering

Dr. Izu has over 30 years of experience in photovoltaics. He has previously played a key technical and managerial role at Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD) in its transformation from R&D to a leading thin-film PV module manufacturing company. As Vice President of ECD, in charge of its Machine Division, he led the team that developed lightweight a-Si PV modules and manufacturing technologies. Dr. Izu received his Doctor of Engineering from Kyoto University in 1968 and has coauthored a number of key patents and technical papers in a-Si roll-to-roll manufacturing technology and related areas.

John Buckey, Vice President of Business Development

Mr. Buckey has over 35 years experience in the planning, structuring and negotiation of business transactions. Before joining Xunlight, Mr. Buckey served as President of the Ohio Division and a member of the Board of Managers at Republic Development, LLC, where he was responsible for business development, the structuring and negotiation of acquisitions and governmental affairs. Previous work experience is in accounting and law, which includes serving as General Counsel and a member of the Board of Directors for a diversified energy company with $350,000,000 in annual sales. Mr. Buckey received his BS in Accounting from Duke University and a Juris Doctor from Emory University School of Law

Dr. Aarohi Vijh, Vice-President of Product Development

Dr. Vijh is an expert in the technology and manufacturing of flexible solar cells and modules. He has worked at Xunlight Corporation and its predecessors since 2005 as Materials Scientist, Senior Scientist, Manager of Technology Development, Director of Process Development and is now Vice President of Product Development. In his current role, he oversees new product introduction activities in coordination with R&D and Marketing. He is an electrical and materials engineer by training and received his Ph.D. from the University of Toledo in 2005.
