January 7, 2011

Xunlight Receives IEC 61646 and 61730 Certification for its Flexible PV Modules

Toledo, Ohio – January 7, 2011 – Xunlight Corporation, a leader in the design, development and manufacture of flexible and lightweight thin-film silicon solar modules, announced today that it has received certification under the requirements of IEC 61646 and 61730 standards. This certificate was granted after rigorous testing by TÜV InterCert GROUP, an independent certification organization, and confirms that Xunlight’s flexible and lightweight solar module technology meets the guidelines set forth by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for safety, quality and performance assurance.

With this certification, Xunlight is now part of a very small group of flexible solar module manufacturers eligible to sell into the European marketplace. Five of the company’s products with wattages up to 307 watts per module and use in systems up to 1000 Volt DC, have been approved. The certified modules include those with widths of both 91 cm and 48 cm wide, and a total length up to 5.5 meters long. The new certifications are an important complement to Xunlight’s existing UL 1703 standard certifications for the North American market.

These IEC 61646/61730 and UL1703 certified products are produced using Xunlight’s 25MW roll-to-roll solar cell production line and are available in high volume. Xunlight currently has a European sales backlog of close to $60 million, and this certification allows the company to deliver initial quantities to its European partners for installation on commercial rooftops and other applications.

“This is major milestone in Xunlight’s efforts to become a world-leading producer of low-cost, highpowered flexible and lightweight solar modules,” said Xunming Deng, Xunlight’s President and CEO. “I am also happy to announce that we have made our first shipment today of IEC certified product to a European customer.”

Xunlight Corporation announced today that its flexible solar panels are now being used to power the first 100% solar powered billboard in New York City’s Times Square.

Xunlight PV Modules Power Times Square Billboard

Toledo, OH and New York, NY – June 8, 2010 – Xunlight Corporation, a leader in the development and manufacture of thin-film silicon solar modules, announced today that its flexible solar panels are now being used to power the first 100% solar powered billboard in New York City’s Times Square. The Ricoh Eco Board, located at the northwest corner of 7th Avenue and 42nd Street in New York, is powered by 24 Xunlight XR36 thin-film silicon photovoltaic modules and other solar panels. These products incorporate Xunlight’s triple-junction thin-film silicon solar cells produced using its proprietary high speed 25MW wide-web, roll-to-roll PV manufacturing equipment. Xunlight worked with Ricoh Americas Corporation, Takara Media, Cooley Group, and Lamar Advertising on this Ricoh Eco Board project.

“We are very pleased to have our flexible and lightweight PV modules incorporated into this innovative outdoor advertising application. This project highlights the flexibility of lightweight solar systems for a variety of markets and applications.” said Dr. Xunming Deng, President and CEO of Xunlight. Dr. Deng will join officials from Ricoh Company, Ltd., Ricoh Americas, Cooley Group, and the City of New York at 5:30pm today (June 8, 2010) at a special ceremony in New York City’s Times Square to celebrate the completion of this solar powered billboard project.

Xunlight recently received certification for its flexible and lightweight photovoltaic modules under the ANSI/UL1703 standard for North American markets. ETL certification was granted following rigorous testing by Intertek, an independent product safety certification organization. A recent survey of available products in the solar market shows that with this certification, Xunlight has become one of very few PV module manufacturers today having flexible PV products certified to ANSI/UL1703 standards.

In addition to this solar powered billboard project, Xunlight has recently completed the production of solar modules for a 50KW system to be installed at the I-280 right-of-ways to power the lighting system for Toledo, Ohio’s Veterans’ Glass City Skyway, along with another 50KW system supplied by First Solar.

Several weeks ago, Xunlight also participated in a ProLogis rooftop PV testing site which has installed solar modules from eight different module manufacturers: Ascent Solar, First Solar, GS-Solar, MiaSole, Solyndra, Suniva, Uni-Solar and Xunlight. The initial configuration provides side-by-side comparisons of several module technologies, including monocrystalline, glass-on-glass thin film and membrane-applied thin film modules.

To expand its applications, Xunlight has, during the past year, executed three long-term module supply agreements with a total purchase price of $86 million. One of the three contracts is with a US-based PV system integrator while the other two are with European customers.

Later this week, Xunlight will showcase its flexible and lightweight PV modules from June 9 to 11 at InterSolar 2010, in Munich, Germany (Booth 131 in Hall B6).

Xunming Deng and Liwei Xu

Xunming Deng and Liwei Xu left Nanchang, China, 25 years ago to begin graduate studies at the University of Chicago—Deng in physics and Xu, his wife, in chemistry. Though both had 10 years of English instruction and were outstanding students—each was awarded an all-expenses scholarship—neither had ever set foot in the U.S. before. What they’ve accomplished since receiving their PhDs may be more exceptional: They’ve established a green-energy company in Toledo, Ohio, in the middle of America’s struggling automotive manufacturing belt. Moreover, their solar-panel startup, Xunlight, is making products different from most others on the market. Conventional solar panels are rigid and relatively heavy. Xunlight’s are flexible and lightweight, which means they should be easier to install and could work in more settings. Deng, 46, and Xu, 45, founded their company in 2002, when both were professors at the University of Toledo. They licensed their technology, which they had helped develop, from the university. Xu then put her grant-writing skills to use to get money. She got $100,000 from the Small Business Innovation Research program in 2003, which allowed the couple to outfit an office and hire a couple of students. Since then, Xunlight has received $29.6 million more in government grants and loans and $42.5 million from venture capital funds in the U.S. and Europe. CEO Deng has invested much of that to equip a factory that can coat thin sheets of stainless steel with sunlight-capturing silicon film. The plant now has the annual capacity to make panels capable of generating 25 megawatts of electricity, enough for 25,000 homes. Xunlight, which is up to 110 employees, has sold gear for a few test sites, including a billboard in New York’s Times Square. Pending a seal of approval from Underwriters Laboratories, it could enter the commercial market by early April.

Xunlight Delivers First Shipment of Flexible Solar Modules from 25MW Production Line

Toledo, Ohio – August 24, 2009 – Xunlight Corporation, the University of Toledo (UT), and the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD) jointly announced today that Xunlight has delivered its first shipment of flexible and lightweight, triple-junction amorphous silicon solar modules manufactured on its newly installed 25 Megawatt (MW) wide-web roll-to-roll PECVD production line. This shipment of modules is part of a 10KW solar array to be installed at UT’s Scott Park Campus of Energy and Innovation (SPCEI).

Xunlight Corporation, a technology spinoff from UT and a recipient of several ODOD grants, is a leader in the design, development and manufacture of flexible and lightweight thin-film silicon solar modules. This shipment of modules represents the first sale produced using its proprietary 25MW wide-web, roll-to-roll PV manufacturing equipment which is redefining the industry as a low-cost, high-throughput solution to large-scale solar cell production. The 25MW solar cell manufacturing equipment, a 200-feet long series of connected vacuum deposition chambers, uses a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition process to deposit thin-film silicon solar cells on a 3ft wide, one-mile-long thin stainless steel substrate at a speed of 720-square feet per hour. This manufacturing process is inherently lower-cost and more productive than competing technologies, and is designed, developed and constructed by Xunlight Corporation.

“Our first sale and delivery of solar modules marks a significant milestone for Xunlight, and it is especially noteworthy that The University of Toledo is our first customer”, said Xunlight CEO Dr. Xunming Deng. “Our deep roots and strong relationship with both UT and ODOD have been instrumental in the development of our technology and the success of our company to date, and Xunlight is thankful for those important relationships.”

“This is a watershed moment for the University of Toledo as Xunlight, one of our technology spinoffs and a company developed in our Clean and Alternative Energy Incubator, has now reached commercialization. UT is proud of the accomplishments Dr. Deng and Xunlight have achieved and it’s a great honor to be the company’s first customer”, said UT President Dr. Lloyd Jacobs.

“Xunlight is an invaluable partner with the state in our aggressive work to foster the development and production of advanced energy technologies,” said Lisa Patt-McDaniel, Interim Director of the Ohio Department of Development. “We applaud Xunlight and Dr. Deng for this important achievement and we look forward to continuing our very successful public-private partnership.”

Recently, Xunlight has been highlighted in several global publications and media outlets including The Economist (Aug. 15, 2009), The New York Times (July 20, 2009) and Voice of America (July 28, 2009). To see these stories, please use the links below:
